In preparation for their next full length, Danish death metal monsters Undergang release a mini-album consisting of 2 new tracks, a live recording and a cover of Finnish legends Funebre. Driving in with an immediately pummelling blend of stench-ridden guitars and slow tempo drum pounds, met with swirling leads, Undergang are back on top form with a mid-tempo crawl through Denmark’s sewers. Spewing out rancid vocals atop instrumental grooves from the bowels of hell, there is a gorgeously meaty and damp sound to the putrid opening track that hits hard with concussively percussive blows. Savagely filthy vocals are consistent on the EP (and their career as a whole) that are perfectly matched to the upbeat and doomy grinds alike, offering a truly malignant concoction of death metal excellency throughout. The second track opens with stunningly creepy horror samples to set the mood, distorting with unsettling synths before the crisp meandering guitars sway in with more churning malice. As is often the case with Undergang, the full sound and mix of the release sounds cavernous and dripping with a primordial ooze that seeps forth from the guttural soundscapes of the band beautifully. Vomited vocals are used consistently throughout but we are given plenty of tasty riffing and immense drum fills to back them up, leaving a fierce trail of decay in its wake. Smashing out groove after groove over chiming drums, this will certainly get you hooked to headbang with its beefy catchiness. Jumping into the upbeat grooves of a Funebre classic (additionally, my favourite Funebre song), it is immediately clear that not only will the cover be well-played but will retain the stench of Undergang’s signature sound for a unique version of the song. A storming onslaught of nostalgically crushing riffs hit hard with a rhythm that perfectly suits the band and this release to perfection. Stunningly played without just doing a straight rip, this is how a cover should be executed and god damn the whammy drop leading into some of the best grooves ever written should get any death metal fan salivating. Finally we are given a live version of the bands debut album title track, which for those of us who have seen Undergang live certainly shall rekindle memories of a brilliant show. The raw surging assaults of slow riffs and snappy drums hit hard with a disturbing cacophony of Undergang madness, driving out a well-recorded live take that shows just how insanely capable they are as a live band and how ferociously the music can be used for a live onslaught. Storming tremolo riffs overlay blast-beats mixed with snarling odious vocals for a modern day death metal classic, I am really pleased they included this live version because it is devastating. This mini-album has certainly fulfilled its role in getting me excited for the full release ahead with two stunningly grotesque new tracks, a fantastically chosen cover and a monumental live version. Get ready for more to come from Denmark’s rotten titans! Written for www.nattskog.wordpress.com
