PORTAL Vexovoid LP

To this day, I am still confused by the negative response this album gets by some. Perhaps it is the catchy nature of the album that caused it to be exposed to people that [perhaps] should not be listening to it? Perhaps it is the catchy nature of the album that made old-time Portal purists balk? I am unsure. But, one thing is clear for me: This is an amazing record.

The first important point to mention about this album is the production. This album is tuned to the low frequencies, and intentionally done so - but, with great clarity. This is unlike the prior Portal records which lacked clarity. This gives this album a low, grinding feeling - kinda like being drug through a bleak, dark mire. This was clearly their intent, however.

The 2nd important point is that unlike their previous material, the songs on this album have a more catchy quality to them. Starting with the opening track, "Kilter", the band shows that they aren't afraid to show off some riffs, along with their technical prowess. "Curtain" is the big music video for the album, and this one is frightening to behold. Great stuff! My personal favorite track is "Plasm" with its strange demented bending, tremolo sequence. In my opinion, there is a lot to like for a death metal fan and the vocals are certainly unique.

Unfortunately, for many, this album is going to be a difficult one to digest. It is a concept album and, for the uninitiated, you almost need to be in the mood for something "different" unless you like experimental/avant garde type metal. Others may balk, especially with the bass frequencies presented.

Overall, this is a great album and I tend to enjoy listening to it around Halloween. For some reason, it really gets me in the holiday spirit (perhaps it is the horror-based nature of the album?). Perhaps others will enjoy it in this way as well? I find it best to listen to it on 35 minute car rides when it is raining and gloomy and the leaves are falling. This album really captures the spirit!
