Both the strings and the drums have followed simplistic structures that remind of the darkest essence worshiped in the days of yore in classic releases like “Blood Upon The Altar” and “INRI.” The  hymns flow through passages of lightning fast barrage of blasts and  memorable, evil riffs while slowing down in phases in the middle just to gear up for another assault on the senses of all that is consecrated. The vocals are marked by reverb-drenched throaty rasps born from the innermost spirit of a tormented self, a style that works brilliantly to do justice to song titles like “Ritual Vomitting”. It’s gritty, ugly, rancid and abysmal, preserving the olden aesthetics of  Canadian\/Brazilian\/Finnish black metal. The sound production is one element that really stands out as something remarkable – old, primitive and death-worshiping to the bones! All music on this release was recorded at Blasphemous War Goat! Studios and mixed\/mastered by the very experienced and talented B.W.G. (Genocide Shrines\/Funeral in Heaven). Reveal’s initiation starts with a short and random intro, which basically is just a noise but fuels curiosity of what’s lying in wait, followed by a heavy hail of riffs that sound occult, powerful and ancient at the same time. As soon as with the first note, Reveal create an immediate, overwhelming atmosphere which persists throughout the entire record and marks just one of the unique trademarks of this band. If you, like me, find pleasure in the sound of Samael’s first two albums, Master’s Hammer’s ‘Ritual’, Rotting Christ’s ‘Ade’s Wind’ demo or Repugnant’s ‘Epitome Of Darkness’, than you will simply love ‘Nocturne Of Eyes And Teeth’ to bits. It’s been a long time since a record’s sound has had so much depth and force. The extremely pressuresome guitars, a crepitant bass and a snare, bass drum and toms that can only be described as massive, represent a masterpiece of sound engineering. An intense reverberation on the vocals from start to finish is just the icing on a cake that is anything but sweet. In combination with Ghost’s voice, the vocals are very different to your average band; not just the usual evil and grim, but beastly and downright menacing; full of fever and fervency and they will keep echoing on in your head long after the record’s last note has ceased. While remaining within their very vein at all times, they still prove to be extremely adaptive to the different moods of the songs. It’s a subtle but effective diversification without really altering; unobvious to superficial consideration, hence very impressive. Musically the band isn’t facing any problems keeping up with the quality of sound and vocals. Generally fast and dangerous, Reveal subject themselves to no boundaries. They’re easily switching back and forth between old-school Thrash and ancient Death riffs – just like Sarcofago did in their early days - blending in some Black and Heavy Metal elements, as well as a good deal of groove and Doom – most prominently of course on the last track ‘Death’, with its almost eight minutes running time the perfect sinister finisher that lives from its tonally towering atmosphere, and which lets the album still haunt you for quite a while after it’s faded. Single leads are penetrating the material, thus loosening it up; quite a melodic, gentle undertone to it at times helps adding further appeal. Creepy, eerie solos and subtly applied effects such as distorted choirs, a phaser or thunder-like roaring provide ‘Nocturne Of Eyes And Teeth’ with a very special touch that proves vital in procreating the unique and cryptic flair of this record. Subtle in general seems to be the crucial word when talking about Reveal. Although on the whole the music is massive and pretty straight-forward, ‘Nocturne Of Eyes And Teeth’ lives from details in abundance. There is a lot to discover if you let yourself into it, and it is the entirety of all those subtle details that makes Reveal absolutely fascinating on this album. Mellow arrangements - well thought-through – ensure a huge deal of coherence and authenticity of the songs, and are just another guarantor for maintaining interest in and awareness of this record for a longer period of time. As a result, Reveal certainly have a great potential of standing the test of time. Although they don’t reinvent the wheel, it is the perfect symbiosis of delicate arrangements and the powerful old school riffs in combination with the sound, effects and execution which makes this an outstanding record. A staggering overall structure paired with a merciless determination, the foul odour of ancient extreme Metal and something really quite menacing to it makes this the perfect album for anyone seeking for a band that’s got the old days’ marrow, but with a twist. The better part of the songs sounds like it actually stems from ’89, and ever since it ran for the first time I’ve got this strange familiarity with it; the constant immediate feeling as if I have known this record for many years. This is surely the most impressive thing about it. With just under half an hour total running time it is a rather short one though, which is why the repeat button is on permanent duty. ‘Nocturne Of Eyes And Teeth’ is covering new grounds without leaving the realms of – for want of a less worn-out word – old school. If this won’t convince you to give it a go, you cannot be helped. This is grandeur! Overall this is a good black \/ death metal fusion piece, very tight technically yet sounding quite loose and loopy, and deranged near its end.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\"474\", the other track, is a more malevolent and melodic creature with a stronger doom emphasis. Bass riffs exude an unhealthy and sinister air, and the counterpoint tremolo melody is equally menacing. The drumming is better here with a stronger sound. About halfway through the song enters a savage blast-beat phase and during this section sheer horrific sonic violence almost erupts. Madness soon overtakes the musicians and possesses them completely and the song races off on a demented path with lots of growling and screaming.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor most people, this EP will be all the Abominor output available and as it is, it probably doesn't represent what the band is really capable of. When the musicians go fast, the sound gets a bit thin and light in parts; when they decide to go slower, the music becomes more powerful and doomy, and the black claustrophobic atmosphere makes itself felt. Both songs are dominated by riffing and strong rhythms though there are occasional melodic tendencies. The music is hard-hitting and raw, manic for the most part and very uncompromising. Meanwhile Mark Howitzer screams like possessed and Chris Masochist and Hexx play some noisy, Slayer-esque solos. Indoctrine is alternately epic and unhinged, insane and coldly logical,and is entirely impossible to predict. Everything on this record serves to further the story, a tale of a fanatic who turns on the rest of society, believing himself to be the executioner of a terrible God. The resulting paeans to the \"War-Giver\" and \"Blood-Letter\" are just plain brilliant, unsettling and demanding in equal measure. Repetition is used to great effect -- key phrases like \"a moving target\" and \"like a wounded animal\" help unify the tracks into a single narrative -- yet each song has a specific statement of its own to make. These are surely some of the most distinctive lyrics ever written for the genre, and their delivery is even more so: Nemtheanga's vocals are jaw-droppingly unique, swinging from megalomaniacal clean singing to the embodiment of snarling, barking madness, often within the same song.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLikewise, the instrumentalism here rages and swaggers, trapped between the certainty of fanaticism and a monumental, frothing hatred. The riffing and drumming on this album immediately recall Axis of Advance -- they're simultaneously chaotic and driving, and are packed with unpredictable changes, one-of-a-kind fills, and catchy-yet-bizarre guitar lines. Indoctrine is both more melodic and more linear than Axis of Advance ever was, though. The occasional moments of pure melody, like the end of \"The Martyrs Brigade\", are made tremendously powerful by the churning madness that surrounds them. Fear not, because J. Read's insane drum lines are as distinctive as ever, as is Vermin's frantic guitar work. The crisp production and (slightly!) less chaotic songwriting on this record hasn't blunted their attack; if anything, it merely serves to bring what they're doing front-and-center. They're not afraid to slow down on this record, either: there are some monumental doom sections on this record, and the crushing central track, \"My Name In Blood Across the Sky\", is practically mid-paced... by their standard, at least.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThat brings me to the combination of the vocals and instruments, which is where this album truly transcends the herd. Clean vocals over chaotic war metal could have been used as nothing more than a gimmick, but it's not so here. The imperious, overbearing tone Nemtheanga adopts on this record fits the subject perfectly, and the occasional switch to more conventional harsh vocals is brilliantly done. His singing is never content to simply sit on top of the music -- the vocals here are always used as either a complement or counterpoint to what's going on beneath, almost as if they're another instrument. The vocal delivery on Indoctrine is nothing short of stunning; in just one album, this band has utterly transcended the rules about what \"works\" in extreme metal and what doesn't. I'd love to say that Indoctrine will herald the birth of a new sub-genre... but I doubt that more than a handful of people are up to the challenge, so I suspect it'll remain unique.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUntil the next album, at least.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBlood Revolt earns my highest recommendation -- Indoctrine is an instant classic, and an album others will be compared to in ten years' time. Out of the blue, this album appeared and floored everyone. Why? The fact that something so ingenious and erratic was still possible in a genre in which many have dismissed as exhausted through and through of anything innovative and original. This is true to an extent, black metal is a genre which has been suffering majorly from a drought of inspiration of late, though occasionally a band comes along every once in a while to try out something new and against the grain. Sometimes it works, but more often than not it doesn't and said band fades away to languish in obscurity. This is always going to be the way because black metal fans more than most are always skeptical of changes, they can be a tough bunch to satisfy at the hardest of times. This is where Negative Plane come in. If you've ever listened to a band for the very first time, and after one listen to the album sat up and thought to yourself “Wow, this is unlike anything I've ever heard before, yet absolutely astounding; these guys are going to be big” then you've felt the same as to what I felt when I first heard Negative Plane. They retain enough of the traditional ethics and basis of traditional black metal and fuse it with a bizarre amalgamation of gothic horror and archaic styling that will unite even the most fickle of black metal fans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePicture yourself in a vast cathedral, enshrouded in an ancient horrific mist, gradually dragging you down into a fear induced delirium, a swirling myriad of primeval voices strangle the remains of any rational thought you may have left like the rat in it's dying throes to the python. Extravagant, yes, but an album such as this deserves nothing less. I have heard various people liken it almost to a Lovecraftian horror soundtrack, and in a way there could not be a more apt definition for the sound of Stained Glass Revelations. It's ominous, foreboding and terrifying, yet at the same time it has this almost ridiculous macabre carnival-esque atmosphere. This is due in no small part to the contributions of Nameless Void, who provides both the guitar work and the vocals. The guitar is swathed in layers of reverb and with the slightly more prog route they have taken in regards to the guitars this time around they have veered off into a more definitive psychedelic route, something along the lines of “A Church in Ruin” off their debut. The sheer variation and multiform nature of the guitar work is astounding, no second riff is ever the same, one minute NV is playing something similar to Celtic Frost, the next it's a totally abstract guitar lead where every note reflecting off every corner of your mind. I mentioned Celtic Frost before, and they probably are one of Negative Plane's main influences. Certainly on the debut at least, maybe less so on this album which is so unique it's a challenge in itself to try and compare it to anything. At times the album doesn't even sound metal, as I stated before at points it morphs into something almost like dark, twisted circus music, and the vocals of NV are the voices of cast; twisted and unhinged and spitting corruption. “The One and the Many” is a great example of this, rising and falling around the vocals of Nameless Void. The bass and drum work definitely shouldn't be ignored either, the bass resonating beneath the chaos above it and one of the main components of the overall atmosphere, while the drumming is best described as extremely unpredictable and unconventional. Bestial Devotion is a big fan of his cymbals, chaotic and complex at the same time with no holding back on the quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe atmosphere pours out of this record in waves, it's an atmosphere not dissimilar to that of Drawing Down the Moon or De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, one which is extremely dense, ambiguous and warped, an atmosphere that completely makes the album what it is. They also are one of the few bands who actually manage to use interludes to their full effect and not just for aimless filler, using them to build the suspense in between each song, and avoid using shitty samples and actually composing the interludes themselves. If I had to pick one song which would sum up the album thoroughly, it would be the enigmatic “Angels Veiled in Bone”. As dark and as depraved as the dungeons of Hades while throughout it all flicking a wry smile. Grandiose riffing and chromatic leads, psychopathic vocals and an atmosphere that puts almost every other band out there at the minute to shame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith Stained Glass Revelations, Negative Plane move up to the top rung of the ladder and it would be a horrendous injustice if they don't get more recognition on the back of an absolute gem such as this. The move in a more psychedelic direction was an utter masterstroke by them, but I still don't think it's their 'pièce de résistance' as such, because I honestly think they have even better in them. I guess only time will tell. A work of unassailable genius. Obscure, mysterious and at times downright petrifying, all the while wearing a masque of perverse humour.
